"Sidelights"

The first time I painted this house years ago, the family had already moved on and the house was in disrepair. But the morning sun glinting off the dusty windowpanes, the old sofa on the front porch, and the old hydrangea bush had a magical quality and kept drawing me back. I can still smell the summer grass and feel my damp shoes as I explored, the dust motes and flying insects rising around me. Now I'm painting the house mostly from memory, so certain details are gone, and others are stronger.
